The vaccines, which include antibiotics and de-worms, will go a long way in improving the health status of livestock in the country.

A senior livestock health expert with the department, Dr Josphat Nyika, yesterday said the order was made following discussions between the governments of China and Zimbabwe, which subsequently led to a soft loan being advanced to Zimbabwe.

"Under the agreements, we have ordered dipping chemicals that could last us two years while other sectors, which include agriculture, have since received fertilizers and queletox to destroy quelea birds.

"We are expecting our consignment anytime soon as we are battling to cover the whole country," Dr Nyika said.

He said some local companies were still producing the chemicals but could not meet demand.

Dr Nyika said the Veterinary Services Department had acquired 20 tonnes of cattle dipping chemicals worth $6,5 billion from a local dealer.

"The chemicals only allow us to dip our cattle twice in all parts of the country. This means the chemicals we are currently distributing will only last two weeks."
