DENMARK - Senior scientist Peter Thomsen, Department of Animal Health and Bioscience, has been awarded the C.O. Jensen Memorial Fund prize for his study on downer cows.

Senior scientist Peter Thomsen from the Department of Animal Health and Bioscience at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Aarhus University, has been awarded a prize of 8000 DKK from the C.O. Jensen Memorial Fund. The prize cannot be applied for, but is given to young Danish veterinarians as an encouragement for their research.
The research focus in 39-year-old Peter Thomsen’s work is the health and welfare of dairy cows and includes methods to prevent downer cows.
Epidemiological studies of health and welfare in dairy herds, the assessment of health at cow and herd level, the development of scoring systems for clinical evaluations of dairy cows and the prevention of hoof diseases are all areas that Mr Thomsen has worked in.
His research efforts are well supported by practical experience as he has worked for five years as a bovine practitioner. Peter Thomsen completed his veterinary training in 1997 and obtained his PhD in veterinary epidemiology in 2005.
The C.O. Jensen Memorial Fund was established in 1937 in memory of Professor C.O. Jensen, founder of the State Veterinary Serum Laboratory (now the National Veterinary Institute). The award ceremonies take place on Professor C.O. Jensen's birthday on 18 March.
