FMD Breaks Out in Kazakhstan Cattle
KAZAKHSTAN - The country's veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in cattle and sheep/goats.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Friday, 27 May. The outbreak was first detected on 21 May, and confirmed three days later, on 24 May at a village called Akzhaik in the city of Uralsk.
According to the report, a total of 550 cattle were found susceptible to the disease, out of which 53 cases were identified. No deaths were recorded. However, all 550 animals were destroyed.
Introduction of new live animals has been identified as the main source of the outbreak.
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test was conducted at the country's National Reference Laboratory in cattle, confirming the presence of the FMD virus in the country.
