Wisconsin Milk Production Drops, Again
US - For the fourth consecutive month, Wisconsin dairy farmers produced less milk on their operations than they did the same time a year earlier, states Wisconsin Ag Connection.

But the USDA announced that total milk production for the 23 major dairy states in July rose by a slight 0.8 per cent from 2010 at 15.4 billion pounds. That figure was lower than June's production of 16.5 billion.
Wisconsin produced 2.18 billion pounds of milk in July--down 3.5 per cent below last year, and less than June's 2.2 billion pounds.
California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.5 billion pounds. Texas had the highest percent-increase for the month as that state put out 8.3 per cent more milk than last year at 798 million pounds.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.47 million head, 93,000 head more than July 2010, and 8,000 head more than June 2011.
Wisconsin was milking about 1.26 million head of dairy cattle during the month, with total production averaging 1,730 pounds per cow for the month- which was about 65 pounds less than last year's average for June. The national per-cow average was down five pound at 1,824 pounds per animal.
