MEXICO - The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), Francisco Mayorga Castañeda, and the Governor of Baja California Sur (BSC), Mark Covarrubias Villaseñor, held a working meeting to define actions in the strengthening of fisheries management and care for those affected in the agricultural sector by climatic disasters. With the participation of the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), Ramon Corral Avila, laid out a plan to strengthen the inspection and monitoring of fishing activities, which also involved a project to determine the coordination of actions depending on the length of coastline.
With regard to fisheries management, work for the issuance and renewal of permits in seven fishing regions of lobster fisheries, chocolate clam, clam ladybug, lion's paw and scales. So far 400 applications have been received and 200 of these have been authorised under CONAPESCA.
Similarly, the process will be gradual for the fishermen who require engine changes for their boats, as well as the management of projects to take more advantage of the utilisation of fisheries, and also of innovation and technology transfer.
Coordinated actions were defined for health care and delivery of technology packages in the areas affected by drought. Currently being implemented is the building of networks that can operate as food banks for use in difficult seasons, helping to counteract emergencies.
In addition, a work plan will specify in which different federal government agencies to participate, through temporary jobs, to support farmers affected in the construction of water collection and storage for the benefit of their own production units.
