Paraguay Works To Recover Markets
PARAGUAY - A delegation of Russian veterinarians has met with representatives from the Paraguayan Animal Quality and Health National Service (SENACSA), in order to obtain an update on the procedures and methods taken by Paraguay to eradicate and control the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, reports Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

The outbreak was notified to the World Organisation for Animal Health on 19 September.
MLA reports that Paraguay initially suspended beef exports to all countries for 60 days as a precautionary measure. However, a number of markets including Russia, Brazil and Chile (among others) have banned Paraguayan imports until further assessment.
According to SENACSA, lab tests are being undertaken to determine the source of the outbreak. However, it has been recognised that analysis systems have to be upgraded. In addition, Mercosur's Permanent Veterinary Committee has backed the measures taken by Paraguay to control the outbreak.
Paraguay is currently focused on re-opening the Russian market, as this market is currently not FMD free. Paraguay's largest beef export market, Chile, has FMD free without vaccination status, thus requiring much stricter requirements for re-entry.
