OIE: TB Identified In Mauritius

On 30 August 2011, a state veterinarian attended a sick cow with inappetence and loss of condition. Not responding to treatment, the cow was slaughtered on 13 September 2011, and the carcase was seized due to general bovine tuberculosis (TB) lesions.
On 15 September 2011, intradermal TB tests were carried on the herd of 44 animals. Four positive cases were identified, while two suspects were isolated. The four animals were slaughtered. All precautionary measures, like discarding milk, Mantoux tests for personnel in contact, etc. were taken. On 25 October 2011, a retest using intradermal TB revealed 17 positive cases. All the herd (27 cattle) including 16 goats were slaughtered. The carcases were sent to the approved landfill.
Animal tissues are being screened by Chest Clinic, Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, under the Ministry of Health, for strain identification. Results are awaited.
Control measures include movement control inside the country.
