FMD Rumbles on in Eastern Turkey
TURKEY - Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) continues to cause intermittent problems in endemic regions. Of particular concern is Turkey, where FMD is continually being reported from the Asian side of the country, and Paraguay, where an outbreak has resulted in the temporary suspension of export certificates.Turkey has now reported over 1500 outbreaks of FMD this year, of which nearly 130 were in the past three months.
The serotypes involved were predominantly FMD A (Iran-05AFG-07), with occasional outbreaks of FMD O (ME-SA/PanAsia-2ANT-10) and FMD Asia 1. Israel has continued to report outbreaks of FMD, despite its compulsory vaccination programme.
The World Reference Laboratory at the Institute for Animal Health, Pirbright, has sequenced the virus from the Israel outbreaks as FMD O ME-SA/PanAsia-2ANT-10, which is the same serotype as that reported in Turkey during 2010 and 2011 and that reported in Bulgaria earlier this year.
