OIE: FMD Outbreak Reported In Paraguay
PARAGUAY - An outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) was reported to OIE by Dr Hugo Federico Idoyaga Benitez, Director General of SENACSA, San Lorenzo, Paraguay.

There has been one outbreak, of FMD reported to the OIE.
The outbreak was reported at San Pedro, Aguaray Amistad on the 30 December 2011.
The farm affected is a breeding and fattening cattle unit. There is a cattle population of 131 heads (adult cows and animals under 24 months).
During the epidemiological surveillance carried out in the farm, 15 cattle under 24 months old showed clinical signs compatible with a vesicular disease: salivation and lameness.
Samples were collected from 23 animals: 23 blood samples and six epithelial samples. During clinical inspection, six cattle showed rupture of oral epithelium and lesions on the interdigital and coronary space.
The source of the outbreak is unknown. However the OIE believe the case to be linked to previous outbreaks of FMD in Paraguary in September.
Control measures currently being applied include:
- Quarantine
- Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
- No vaccination
- No treatment of affected animals

- Screening
- Zoning
- Vaccination in response to the outbreak (s)
