South Africa Reports One FMD Outbreak
SOUTH AFRICA - The competent South African veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Mpumalanga.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 1 yesterday, 26 January. The affected population consists of cattle.
According to the report, a total of 1068 animals were found susceptible, out of which ten cases were reported. No deaths were recorded, and no animals were destroyed or slaughtered.
Contact with wild species has been identified as the primary cause of the outbreak. The outbreak is within the protection zone of South Africa's FMD control zone. Cattle in this zone have been vaccinated against FMD.
Vaccination for FMD is prohibited in the rest of South Africa.
