Schmallenberg Update in France
FRANCE - Veterinarians met with Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Agriculture last week to give an update on the detection of Schmallenberg virus in Northern France.Since the emergence of the virus in northern Europe, Mr Le Maire has mobilized DGAL, the Directorate General for Food, to implement specific surveillance , which includes veterinarians, departmental services, health protection groups and the National Health Security (ANSES).
To date in France, the virus has been confirmed on 29 sheep farms in 10 counties north of Caen Besançon (Aisne, Calvados, Haute-Marne, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle, Oise, Pas de Calais, Seine-Maritime, Somme). The virus was identified through malformations and stillbirths.
The virus is not contagious from one animal to another, but is transmitted by insects. This is a livestock disease that occurs in cattle and small ruminants recognisable by fever, a fall in output and symptoms in pregnant animals.
