Rise in Schmallenberg Cases in Cattle
EU - The UK's Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has reported increasing numbers of new Schamllenberg (SBV) cases in cattle and a fall in sheep.

The virus has been identified in two types of midge - Culicoides obsoletus and C. dewulfi. The former was also the ‘primary vector’ identified in BTV8 transmission in northern Europe.
In addition, Belgian scientists have identified SBV in the salivary glands of the midges, rather than just via the blood meal. Together, the findings provide the strongest evidence yet of active midge transmission.
Over 2000 cases have been identified in Europe, in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxumbourg, France, Spain and the UK.
