IDF World Dairy Summit 2012: Sustainability and Green Economy
GLOBAL - The responsibility to provide guidance to the dairy industry in maintaining environmental sustainability has a number of angles which need to integrate holistically to move forward.For example mitigation of the carbon and water footprint of the dairy industry requires first of all a thorough understanding of scientific theory on which the calculations are based and secondly standardization of methodology to be applicable globally. A second angle is continuous updating of where climate change is taking us to enable adjustments in mitigation and saving options, especially in subtropical and developing areas which are not continuous focal points.
Maintaining sustainability always require nitty-gritty measures, innovations and experiences that should be shared by everybody, some of which are primarily applicable to the temperate zone and others to the tropical/sub-tropical regions, and some which are unique to the developed world but not the developing world. A final angle to integrate and follow a holistic approach is to provide guidance in self-regulatory and enforceable measures that can be incorporated in Codes of Best Practice and legislation.
