State Issue Movement Reminder
AUSTRALIA - The Department of Agriculture and Food is reminding importers of stock from interstate to ensure import conditions are met.

The reminder follows the detainment of an imported heifer at the department’s stock yards in Kalgoorlie after it failed to meet the entry requirements for WA.
Department animal disease control manager Bob Vassallo said WA was free from a number of stock diseases which occurred in other states, such as liver fluke and bovine Johne’s disease.
“WA has stringent entry requirements for stock from other states to ensure these diseases do not enter the state and become established,” he said.
Dr Vassallo said the recent detainment highlighted the need for importers to ensure stock meet the requirements for importation.
“The department’s stock inspector at Kalgoorlie determined that the heifer did not meet the entry requirements for liver fluke and detained the animal,” he said.
“The owner had the choice of re-exporting the heifer, destroying it or ensuring it met the entry requirements, choosing the last option. After further treatment and testing for liver fluke it was allowed entry to WA.
“Irrespective of which option is chosen the result is usually significant extra expense to the owner and in some cases the loss of the animal.”
