OIE to Grant FMD Free Status to Peru
PERU – The Minister for Agriculture, Milton von Hesse announced last week that food and mouth disease (FMD) free status would be granted to Peru within a fortnight.During a press conference Mr Von Hesse underlined the important effect the health status could have on the country’s livestock sector and economy in general as exports increase.
He cited that the decision of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has noted the improvements made by the hard work of the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA).
"That is going to allow livestock development, which is still incipient in Peru, can be strengthened with the ability to have more and better access to markets," he said.
Mr Von Hesse listed Latin American, US, Asian and European markets as destinations for Peruvian beef products.
Reports from the OIE in January concluded that Peru was on track to eradicate FMD after finding 88.4 per cent of the country FMD free.
