OIE Reports Another FMD Outbreak in Xinjiang

CHINA - The Chinese veterinary authorities have reported a fifth outbreak of foot and mouth disease at a cattle farm located in Xinjiang.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 4 on Tuesday, 24 September, after enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), gene sequencing and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests were conducted at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, the OIE's reference laboratory, confirming the presence of the FMD virus, serotype A.

A total of 22 animals were found susceptible, out of which two cases were reported. No deaths were recorded. However, all 22 susceptible animals were destroyed.

The administrative division of Xinjiang vaccinated a total of 67969 cattle and 27159 sheep/goats.

The source of the outbreak(s) remains inconclusive.
