Irrigation Keeps Dairy Economy 'Ticking'

NEW ZEALAND - Irrigation has kept the economy of New Zealand ticking through the drought, a farm spokesman has said.

Andrew Hoggard, Federated Farmers Dairy Vice Chairperson said that South Island milk volumes have been regulated through irrigation through a tumultuous period for the industry.

His comments come amid a price frenzy as dairy processors release average payout forecasts and dividend returns for the coming season.

He has called on processors and producers to factor in the role irrigation plays in production.

“Irrigation has delivered consistent milk volumes in the South Island while the lack of irrigation and water storage in the North Island can be seen in the trade deficit for the June quarter,” said Mr Hoggard, adding that the trade deficit totalled $500 million to meat and dairy exports.
