New Farmers Group To Lobby For Dairy Prices in Belgium
BELGIUM – A new organisation will support dairy farms in southern Belgium towards solutions in ensuring sustainable production and more reliable dairy markets. The Wallania Farmers Board (WAFAB) is to monitor agricultural markets against supply and demand fluctuations and ‘ensure sustainable agricultural production’ in Wallonia.
A further aim is to improve the market position of farmers in this region which is ‘chronically weak’ along with the rest of Europe, a European Milk Board (EMB) spokesperson said.
“The producers are unable to defend their interests properly because they are too isolated and lack the cohesion required to have a counter-power,” said WAFAB president Guy Francq.
He added: “It is of primary importance that the Wallonian producers unite in a single structure set up to defend their interests.”
EMB president Romuald Schaber welcomed the move, praising Belgian farmers for using initiative in the market place and improving their chances when dealing with processors and buyers.
“The bigger the number of farmers joining in, the stronger the WAFAB can be in representing them,” he said.
