The bluetongue virus - serotype one - spread across the centre of the country over the late summer period.

This is according to the World Organisation for Animal Health which has reported a glut of cases in the eastern regions of Marche and Abruzzo.

Eighteen Alpacas in Abruzzo have been hit with the virus, as well as hundreds of goats and thousands of sheep and cattle.

In all, 952 sheep deaths, and one cow and goat death were confirmed in the latest disease update going back to mid-July, which confirmed 18 cases in Alpacas.

One infection has been classed as ‘wild’.

Cases are still mounting in hard hit regions of Lazio, Calabria and Umbria.
