UK is Biggest Contributor to EU Milk Production Rise
UK - The UK has added more additional milk into the global pot over the last two years than any other EU country, levy board AHDB Dairy has reported. That was the message from Sophie Helaine from the European Commission at the Semex Conference on Monday.
According to the Commission, UK milk deliveries in 2015 were 1.4bn litres per year higher than in 2013. Over the same period, Irish production only increased by 900m litres, French production by 1.3bn litres, while Dutch and German production rose by 1.1bn litres each.
Much of the UK increase came between 2013 and 2014, when a number of other European countries were still holding back because of quota.
UK milk production is estimated to have reached 14.7bn litres in 2015, its highest level since the mid-1980s. However, it is worth noting that, even at this level, if quotas were in place, the UK would still be below its allocation.
