Processing Investment to Boost South Australia's Dairy Industry
AUSTRALIA - A South Australian State Government grant for a new milk processing facility in Penola is aiming to provide a boost for the local dairy industry as well as providing jobs. The $2 million Regional Development Fund grant is supporting the $60 million project undertaken by Midfield Meat International.
The new facility, based at the former Safries site, will produce a range of products including whole milk powder, skimmed milk powder, and cream.
Minister for Regional Development, Geoff Brock, said: "This project will provide a timely economic boost for the dairy industry in the state's South East. Growing demand from the Chinese market and other new and established markets for milk powder makes this an opportune investment, establishing the region as a key supplier to global markets."
The project will create 34 ongoing full time jobs, as well as 80 jobs during the construction period.
Minister for Agriculture Leon Bignell said: "I was born and bred on a dairy farm in the South East and I know just how tough the industry can be.
"Dairy farmers across the state are going through a really hard time and as a Government we will do everything we can to help."
Acting President, South Australian Dairy Farmers Association, Nick Brokenshire, commented: "Midfield's new facility is good news for South Australia's dairy industry. The increase in milk demand to meet the facility's processing capability, and the resulting production, will have positive flow-on effects across the industry and the region."
The $2 million grant was awarded to Midfield Meat International through the RDF's Major Projects Programme.
