9.5 Million gallons of milk produced annually
MALTA - The information campaign promoting local produce launched last year by the government was a great success as 95 per cent of the Maltese population has faith in local produce, said Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Farming Francis Agius yesterday.Dr Agius visited a dairy farm owned by the Azzopardi family in Rabat as part of World Food Day Celebrations. This sector received funding from the Maltese government and the EU to continue improving the product for the consumer’s benefit, said Dr Agius.
“The restructuring in our farms is improving breeding methods while keeping the highest hygiene standards on the farm.”
The government set up the Interherd Milk Project two years ago, which is partly funded by the EU. Together with the Milk Cooperative, the project aims to train all farmers to keep records of the animal stock and milk produced. This sector received over Lm1,365,000 in funds from the Maltese government since Malta became an EU member.
