Sainsbury's increase retail price of milk
Sainsbury's has moved to increase the retail price of milk, asking processors to pass the buck back to farmers. It seems that Sainsbury's have followed Tesco's example set earlier this year, due to an increasing feel that milk revenue simply isn't satisfactory for dairy farmers and that compensation ought to be due. A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said: "We increased the retail price of our milk on Thursday 8th March. This followed a recent meeting with our processors, Dairy Crest and Wiseman Dairies, who presented the farmers' case for a cost increase.
“As a result of this we have agreed an increase in the cost of milk that we buy and asked the processors that this be passed back to the farmer, thus impacting the farmgate price."
Consequently the price of milk which has remained purposefully low for a long time will see a reasonable increase. A single pint will now retail on our shelves at 35p, two pints for 66p, four for £1.15 and six for £1.68t.
