News Item: Latvia - Dairy Industry Programme.
LATVIA - Latvia's Agriculture Ministry has worked out a strategic programme for the development of the domestic dairy industry that envisages increases in milk production and processing, and better milk quality, which will facilitate exports of higher value added products, according to Baltic Business News.Analysts in Riga say that the reaction among milk and dairy producers to the programme has been mixed, with many co-operatives and small dairy producers saying that the programme favours larger-scale producers.
Latvia's Agriculture Ministry said this is a draft programme that has no legal force, and that more consultations will be held with dairy farmers. Changes to the programme are expected to be introduced by the government.
