Improving Suckler Cow Fertility = £56 Head Commissioned by QMS and compiled by SAC, the booklet identifies five key principles for improving fertility:

  • Management of bulling heifers

  • Bulls – soundness and fertility

  • Managing cow condition and nutrition

  • Avoiding difficult calvings

  • Maintaining herd health

QMS Chairman Donald Biggar said: “The scope for making these substantial gains through improving suckler cow fertility were first identified through our annual enterprise costing work.

“What we’ve done is to break down the different components and with help from farmers and SAC vets and consultants written a practical, user friendly guide advising producers how they can achieve the same dividends as those at the top end in terms of performance.

“Improvements in percentages of calves reared coupled with gains in the average weaning weight can earn a producer farming 100 head of cows an extra £5,600 a year. At a time when red meat businesses are facing considerable challenges, no one can afford to turn their back on opportunities like this.”
