Grave Concern Takes Root In The Wake Of HSE Report
UK - Early indications from a Health and Safety Executive report that the Foot and Mouth Disease Virus could have originated from the Animal Health Institute or the Merial site has added to the anger and frustration already felt by farmers in Wales.

Dai Davies, President NFU Cymru said, “I have spoken to many farmers over the last few days who are horrified that the source of this outbreak could be from Pirbright – and the suggestion in the findings that the disease could have been transferred, either accidentally or deliberately, by humans will only add to these concerns.
“Nevertheless, this is an important step in better understanding how the virus may have spread to nearby farms. We need to use the findings of this report as part of our on-going control strategy.”
Dai Davies will be meeting with Elin Jones the Rural Affairs Minister at 1.30pm this afternoon to discuss further how the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in Surrey is affecting farmers and the rural economy in Wales. He said, “We will be raising movement to slaughter licenses; welfare movement licenses and the position on fallen stock.”
Mr Davies said, “Finally, I urge all farmers to maintain their vigilance in checking for signs of Foot and Mouth and maintain their bio-security. We all have a part to play in containing this outbreak and eradicating this awful disease.”
