M&S was joined by Waitrose, which pushed its price up from 35p to 40p, a week after Tesco increased it to 40p.

The rises are a result of turbulence in the global milk market and growing demand from Chinese consumers.

At present, milk is twice the price it was six years ago. The increase is the latest indication that, despite official measures showing inflation slowing, many households are coping with large rises in bills.

Dairy farmers have suffered a terrible summer, made worse from the floods in July, which has led to a fall in supply.
