CAP Health Check Implications for Livestock
UK - The NFU's national livestock board has met to discuss the recent CAP Health Check and its implications for livestock farmers across England, particularly the new provision which allows member states to channel unused funds within national ceilings into Article 68.The board unanimously agreed that the first priority was to get Government to agree to use the unused funds and then, if they are secured, the board will look at the best way to use them for the benefit of livestock farmers.
Livestock board chairman Alistair Mackintosh said: "We have made our position perfectly clear to Government that if there is an ability to use extra funds as outlined in the measures announced under Article 68 then we must take advantage of this provision.
"If we manage to secure this money the national livestock board has a duty to urgently look at how to use it. We would have to carefully consider the options available to us and what would be the fairest and simplest method of using it to the benefit of livestock farmers.
"We know that a number of member states are already looking at ways to use this additional money and if others are using it then I would find it unacceptable if we were denied the opportunity to access this money as there are already enough market distortions without adding more."
