Italian Innovation Keeps Cows Cool

ITALY - Italian farmers are installing fans and cold showers for dairy cattle in a bid to keep milk production up during a current heat wave, farmers' organisation Coldiretti said Friday.

According to a report from ANSA.it, cows stressed by soaring temperatures are eating less, drinking more, and producing up to 15 per cent less milk compared to the usual 30 litres a day during other periods, Coldiretti said.

"The situation is especially worrying in lowland areas where the climate is torrid and the humidity makes the heat seem worse for cows, just like for humans," it said.

The ideal temperature for cows is between 22 and 24 degrees, but temperatures have hit the mid 30s this week.
