Nine adult cattle found with oral and feet vesicular lesions have been identified as affected with FMD. The cattle were under communal grazing, in Chikwawa, Shire Valley, South Malawi.

It appears that none of the affected cattle have yet been slaughtered. The last vaccination in the area was November 2008, using trivalent SAT 1,2,3 vaccine. Dr Patrick Chikungwa, from the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development in Malawi says it appears these vaccinations were inadequate.

The last known outbreak of FMD in Malawi was December 2008.
