Welsh Farmers Praise Extension on Relaxation Rules
UK - NFU Cymru has praised the Welsh Assembly Government on their pragmatic approach to an extension of the emergency relaxation to cross compliance regulations on supplementary feeding, for livestock farmers in Wales. The extension of the supplementary feeding rules has now been permitted until 28 February 2010, in response to NFU Cymru’s lobbying regarding the persistence of the severe weather conditions that the Welsh livestock industry has had to overcome recently.
Peter Davies, NFU Cymru Livestock Chairman said, “Even though this extension is subject to conditions, we do welcome this extension as weather forecasters are already predicting that severe weather may once again affect certain parts of Wales during the latter part of next week which may cause further difficulties for Welsh farmers.
“The extension of this rule will be an enormous help as it will allow farmers to give additional feed to their livestock during this cold period. Farmers in agri-environment schemes normally have restrictions imposed on them that don’t allow for supplementary feeding but animal welfare must be our number one priority.
“This move will help ease the pressure being felt by many livestock farmers throughout the country without putting their agri-environment payments at risk. However, farmers need to double check with their local Divisional Office as certain conditions do apply to this extension.”
