Prime Minister Advises Dairy Farmers
UGANDA - Farmers have been urged to take dairy farming seriously because the demand of milk is increasing globally.

“For example, in Uganda, because the economy is growing and the middle class is expanding fast, the demand for milk and dairy products is increasing,” the Prime Minister, Professor Apolo Nsibambi, said.
New Vision reports that the Prime Minister noted that the sector still faces challenges like lack of skills, poor access to support services, like production and marketing advice, little or no capital to reinvest with limited access to credit, small herd size and low milk yields.
Professor Nsibambi made the remarks while launching Sameer Agriculture and Livestock re-branded products. By last year, global milk demand was growing by 15 million tonnes per year, mostly in developing countries.
Africa, being milk-deficient, presents immense opportunities for Uganda. Professor Nsibambi reiterated the government’s commitment of transforming the society from a peasant to a modern and prosperous country.
“The NRM government believes that there is a need to modernise and industrialise agriculture so that we do not just export raw materials,” the Prime Minister said.
The vice-chairman of Sameer Agriculture and Livestock, M.S. Parikh, said the company was at the fore front of transforming the dairy sector in the country.
