Foot and Mouth Disease Breaks Out in Russia

RUSSIA - The Russian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in cattle, swine and sheep.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification yesterday, 21 March. According to the report, the causal agent has been identified as foot and mouth disease virus (SEA topotype), serotype O.

A total of 1518 cattle were found susceptible to the disease, out of which 117 cases were identified. 73 pigs showed signs of susceptibility, out of which one case was reported.

The report states that the village of Us’t-Imalka is located 18 km from the Mongolian border in the buffer anti-FMD zone where the authorities carry out vaccination of cattle, sheep and goats against the FMD serotypes O, A, and Asia-1. For the date of the present report the animals were vaccinated again.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
