CME: Weekly Dairy Slaughter Picks Up
US - Dairy cow slaughter totaled 264,000 head in January, equal to January 2011 but up 2,000 head vs. December 2011 according to USDA’s monthly “Livestock Slaughter” report, writes Alan Levitt, in Friday's dairy report. Region 5 which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin sent 80,400 cows to market followed by Region 9 (Arizona and California) with 70,100 head. USDA’s weekly slaughter data, through Feb. 11, indicates that the slaughter rate has increased and is runnning nearly 5,000 head above Februray 2011 (see chart on full report).
The CME cash cheese markets closed unchanged today with blocks at $1.4675/lb., after three trades, and barrels at $1.4700/lb. with no activity. Cash butter settled 0.25¢ higher at $1.4175/lb. after five trades. Class III futures closed mostly higher while butter futures were mostly lower.
NASS dairy product prices for week ending Feb. 18 were lower vs. the prior week. The NASS butter price posted the largest decline of 5.73¢. Nass prices: cheddar blocks $1.5046 (-2.65¢); barrels $1.5251 (-0.43¢); butter $1.4417 (-5.73¢); nonfat dry milk 1.3637 (-4.02¢); dry whey 63.95 (-0.19¢).
