Over 2,000 Cases of Schmallenberg Reported

EU - Over 2000 cases of Schmallenberg (SBV) have now been reported in the EU.

Cases in the UK have increased to 158 farms, with eleven positive cases in cattle.

SBV infection has only been identified in areas at risk of midge incursion from Northern Europe during summer / autumn 2011.

The highest number of cases are still in Germany, where the virus has been identified on 923 farms.

In France, the number of cases has risen dramatically with 670 farms affected. Over a matter of days the disease was confirmed on 259 new farms across the country.

Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy have also reported outbreaks of SBV.

Spain confirmed their first outbreak of the disease at a sheep farm yesterday.

Earlier this week, the European Union said that any trade restrictions or request for additional certification on live animals or their products due to the occurrence of SBV in the EU are considered as disproportionate and scientifically unjustified.
