NI Commits to Tackling TB in Cattle

NORTHERN IRELAND, UK - Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill has commented that tackling bovine tuberculosis (TB) in cattle is a key priority.

Following DARD's plans to cut TB compensation rates, the Minister has agreed to insert a specific reference to to TB in the draft programme for Government.

“We are investing around £4million to commission a programme of TB and wildlife research and studies towards the ultimate aim of eradicating TB in cattle. We will use the evidence produced by this programme to inform a comprehensive approach that deals with all aspects of TB and will help to reduce the level of disease in cattle.”

The Minister continued: “TB is a very complex disease and there is no simple solution or ‘quick fix’, but I want to make further progress. I have listened to the concerns expressed in relation to TB at the recent DARD roadshows and by members of the ARD Committee. I fully recognise that farmers want to see reduction in this disease. We already have a rigorous EU Commission approved eradication programme in place. We also need to build a sound evidence base to underpin further interventions in cattle and/or wildlife that could help to reduce TB as part of our eradication programme.”

She added: “I want to work constructively with local stakeholders as we develop a comprehensive approach to tackle TB in cattle. I would encourage farmers to get involved in any of the studies that are commissioned in their local areas.”
