The research is been carried out on three large scale practical dairy farms, with each farm housing over 200 cows. Special feed systems have been installed at each unit, to feed different concentrates to the animals.

The nutritional effect on health and fertility can be hard to measure.

"We have installed specialist feeding units on each of the farms and integrated them with the on-farm data collection. We are now in regular contact with each farm, as we are responsible for the data control to guarantee quality results," said Dr Wilfried van Straalen, senior dairy consultant with Schothorst.

As a private research institute in the area of animal nutrition, Schothorst Feed Research has a long history in nutrition research with livestock. The increasing interest in sustainability and prolongation of the production period of dairy cows has elevated the importance of studies towards improved health and fertility.
