Canada Reviews Milk Import Requirements
CANADA - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is reviewing import requirements for milk under the Health of Animals Regulations in order to ensure that Canada’s import controls continue to protect animal and human health.

In recent years there has been an increase in international trade in milk and milk products, including milk and milk products from non-traditional species such as camels and horses. These changing trade patterns increase the risk of foreign animal diseases entering Canada.
The Agency is considering amendments to the Health of Animals Regulations that would continue to allow trade in imported milk and milk products while protecting animal and human health from new and re-emerging diseases.
The CFIA would like your feedback on the following:
Would you support the enhancement of regulations concerning the importation of milk and milk products to adequately address the human and animal disease hazards found in milk?
Do you believe that the placement of additional conditions on the importation of milk and milk products, such as veterinary certification for diseases of concern or acceptable treatment, will have an effect (positive or negative) on you? If so how?
The CFIA will use comments from stakeholders to help shape the regulatory proposal moving forward.
The deadline for comments is October 20, 2012.
