The award honors an individual who has dedicated his or her career to educating, mentoring and advancing the careers of students in the field of bovine veterinary medicine.

Dr Currey was honored with a commemorative plaque during the AABP Annual Conference and will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to next year’s AABP conference. “This award was created to help recognize those practitioners who have had a positive influence on students,” said Mike Bolton, D.V.M., Merck Animal Health dairy technical service veterinarian and past AABP president.

“Dr Currey has played an instrumental role in educating and mentoring veterinary students for more than 35 years as a practitioner and professor. His dedication and eagerness to share his industry knowledge makes him incredibly deserving of this award.” Joann Greenfield, D.V.M., a mentee of Dr. Currey while attending Michigan State University (MSU), presented him with the award. “I admire his humility. He is always willing to share his experiences and mistakes, and not every veterinarian is that honest and open,” said Dr Greenfield.

“He has been a wonderful mentor, and I still call on him today to answer questions and seek recommendations.”

Dr Currey is a clinician in food animal medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine at MSU, where he also earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree. Prior to joining MSU, Dr Currey owned and operated a mixed animal practice in Michigan.

Dr. Currey has received the Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teaching Award, the Pfizer Animal Health Award for Research Excellence and the Birth of a Purebred, a high honor for Michigan veterinarians. He is a member of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), where he serves as a committee member, and is also a member of AABP. Dr Currey is the sixth recipient of the Mentor of the Year Award, which was instituted in 2007.
