Hailed as a catalyst for both public administration and productive sectors, the announcement will bring a relaxation of restrictions on farmers and an improvement in the health status.

The Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Murcia and the Basque region are all now free of the disease as outlined in a European Commission report published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Combatting the disease was stepped up greatly following a royal decree in 1996 which published a raft of measures still applied in contemporary disease programmes.

Further good news comes in five other areas being declared as brucellosis free for sheep and goats.
Asturias, Cantabria, Castille and Leon and the Basque area have been cleared of the dangerous zoonotic disease.
