Multi-targeted Vaccinations Announced As a Success
VENEZUELA – Smallholders are being successfully involved in a swathe of foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccinations that have incorporated a tick vaccine. As well as FMD and tick-borne illnesses, farm-stock are vaccinated for rabies, encephalitis and equine brucellosis, making the rapid progress extraordinary, said programme coordinator Carlos Salas.
“The reason why we incorporated other vaccines was to control tick illness in cattle,” he said. “But, we don’t want to use Ivermectin to fight ticks, we want to reduce the use of chemicals and us the Herber biogar immunogen.”
Dipping animals in chemicals causes environmental pollution and offers a threat to humans, stated Mr Salas.
The programme aims to reduce the need for dipping animals and is run alongside a similar scheme in nearby Cuba.
