Enerlacteo has so far used statistics on farm characteristics, diesel consumption and electricity tariffs from 160 businesses to establish five characteristics of energy use - A-E.

Volunteers from the dairying heartland of Asturias, Galicia and Castilla y Leon have taken part in the programme to address the rising problem of energy costs in farm accounts.

Speaking at a promotional launch of the system at Expobioenergia in Valladolid on Thursday María José Tabernero, Agricultural Technical Institute of Technology of Castile and Leon (Itacyl) said: "The application was developed in a project called prospecting, analysis and dissemination of saving measures and energy efficiency in the dairy cattle sector."

A 'good practice handbook' is the goal of the 160 farm audit which is part of the the National Rural Framework.

Enerlacteo is a government response to rising energy prices over the past two decades as autmoted technologies have appeared on farms.
