According to Fernando Burgaz, director general of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, higher average milk prices highlight the impact made by the Sustainable Dairy Programme.

Consumer Panel data shows average household dairy consumption figures were also over two per cent higher, along with a five per cent increase in spending for the month of October.

The announcement represents progress made since Spanish Minister for Agriculture, Arias Canete presented the opening of the sustainable dairy campaign in early September.

Sales data for the eleven months to October 2013 show a 1.6 per cent rise in cheese and a 1.5 per cent drop in yoghurt.

This detail is available through the Price Observatory Dairy Report, a monthly indicator of dairy market strength.

The Monitoring Committee transcends all aspects of the dairy supply chain, involving producer organisations such as the Agrifood Cooperatives of Spain and the National Federation of Dairy Industries; Haulage and distribution organisations, like the Spanish Association of Distributors and retail groups like the Association of Spanish Supermarket chains.
