The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Thursday, 30 January. The outbreak was initially observed on 25 January and confirmed on 30 January after antigen (Ag) detection ELISA and complement fixation (CFT) tests were conducted on cattle at the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Health (FGBI-ARRIAH), the OIE's reference laboratory.

According to the report, a total of 1976 cattle showed signs of susceptibility, out of which seven cases were reported. In the case of pigs, a total of 1205 animals were found to be susceptible. However, no pigs were affected. None of the animals were found dead, and no animals were destroyed and/or slaughtered.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.

The OIE, in conjunction with the Russian veterinary authorities, have put several control measures in place to control the situation. Some of the measures include:

  • Quarantine
  • Movement control inside the country
  • Screening
  • Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
  • Modified stamping out

None of the animals received vaccination, and no treatment of affected animals has taken place.
