Amul to Set up Dairy Plant in Varanasi

INDIA - Amul brand name of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation subsidiary, Palanpur-based Banas Dairy (Banaskantha District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited) will be setting up dairy plant in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh state, writes Jagdish Kumar.

The plant will be set up with an investment of $34 million to $42 million and will process 500,000 liters of milk daily.

The plant at Karkhianv industrial area near Varanasi airport will start functioning in the next few months and will come up with an area of 30 acres of land provided by the state government.

Apart from developing plant is Varanasi, Banas Dairy is also putting up two dairy plants in Uttar Pradesh, one in Kanpur and another in Lucknow.

Both the plant will have a capacity of processing 500,000 liters a day, which can be expanded by another 500,000 liters taking the overall capacity to 1 million liters at each plant.

According to Banas Dairy, chairman, Parthi Bhatol, UP is the biggest milk producer of the country, but only one per cent of milk producers there were covered by the cooperative sector.

After the establishment of the plant, milk producers in the region will get high prices for their producer which will increase to $0.58 per liter against the current $0.30 per liter.

The cooperative plans to start with packaged milk, buttermilk and later it will include all the Amul products.
Amul is the most preferred milk brand in all milk markets in UP including Varanasi, which consumes 75,000 litres milk per day, GCMMF md, R S Sodhi said.
