Irish Production Lifts Seven Per Cent
IRELAND – Irish May milk output increased seven per cent on 2013 to 784 million litres for the month.Irish farmers have the ability to increase production but could be hit by a super levy this year, say DairyCo analysts.
This was the case in 2013/14 when milk production was one per cent over quota after butterfat adjustments.
“It appears that dairy farmers in Ireland tightened up on managing supply in the last few months of the quota year in response to the threat of superlevy,” said DairyCo analysts this week.
“A proposal to amend butterfat correction coefficients is currently with the European Commission in an attempt to ease the potential superlevy burden on dairy farmers.
“Should the proposal be successful, there may be fewer constraints on milk production growth in those Member States currently limited by quotas.”
