Numbers grew four per cent in 2014, pushing numbers to 1.128 million, the biggest increase in over a decade, according to Eurostat.

Growth has been from a recent trough of just over 1 million in 2010.

UK analysts at DairyCo said: “Ireland has continually increased cattle numbers since 2010 on the back of the Food Harvest 2020 report, released that year, which proposed a target to increase milk production by 50 per cent in 2020.”
