They have repeated demands for a minimum of 25 pence per litre (€0.34/litre) before more farms in the northern region of Cantabria sell-up and leave the sector.

Pleas for a minimum price headline a list of ten demands made to politicians last week from the region, as well as calls for 100 per cent milk collections.

Speaking on behalf of a cross-section of farming bodies, Pedro Gomez, president of the Young Farmers Association of Spain (Asaja) said: “Those who run our countryside and forests are our rural people, we run a serious risk in Cantabria of running out of people in rural areas”.

He said it has “become clear” how important the role of politicians is in mediating between producers and processors.

Another key meeting is set for 11 September, which Mr Gomez said would clarify the measures required to save Cantabria’s dairy farmers.
