Johnson pledges to uphold UK animal welfare standards after Brexit

11 June 2020

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Britain will maintain its animal welfare standards after 2020 transition period.

Reuters reports the PM Johnson said the UK will uphold its high animal welfare standards after the end of the transition period with the European Union after being asked if the UK should expect imports of chlorinated chicken.

Many UK farmers fear that the government will allow US-produced chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-treated beef into the country as part of a free trade deal.

When asked whether the UK will uphold its food standards, Johnson told parliament, “not only will we protect animal welfare standards, but we will be able on leaving the EU, as we have, …to increase our animal welfare standards.”
