Cattle cull will ease BSE risks
UK - Defra is to slaughter around 4,500 cattle which could be at risk from BSE. In preparation for any change to the Over Thirty Month rule and the lifting of the EU ban on beef exports, Defra has started the necessary cull of cohort cattle born after July 1996 that may have been exposed to the same feed as confirmed BSE cases. Farmers who have BSE cohorts on their premises have already received written notification from Defra, and the identified animals will have to remain on the farm until Defra has made arrangements for them to be sent to an OTM abattoir for slaughter.Source: icTeesside
